Traditional Greek Soups

There is no better way to spend a cold night than staying inside, grabbing a glass of wine, and cooking an amazing meal for the family to enjoy together. Add comfort to the harsh winter nights with these traditional Greek dishes that are sure to warm your insides.

Lentil Soup

Lentil soup is a common dish you will find in many different cultures. The Greek spin on this soup is both simple and delicious. Start by cleaning and boiling the raw lentils. While boiling, chop up an onion, garlic, and any other vegetables you want to add. Combine vegetables, lentils, bay leaves, and olive oil in a pot and boil. Finally, add in chopped tomatoes and boil together for about 40 minutes until done. Your kids will love this one!

Lemon and Chicken Soup

If you like lemon, you will adore this greek soup! This dish combines healthy veggies with commonly used greek flavors like feta cheese and garlic. Throw onion, garlic, and carrots into a food processor and blend into small pieces. Saute the vegetables first, throw in chicken broth and chicken breast, squeeze plenty of lemons, and cook until the chicken is done. Sprinkle feta cheese on top and serve with warm pita bread.

Chickpea Soup

This recipe is a favorite because it is quick and easy to make with only a few ingredients. Chickpeas are a huge staple in Greek food and are commonly used to make hummus. All you need to do for this dish is saute the onions, pour chickpeas in, cover with warm water, and simmer for 40 minutes. Top the soup with lemon, olive oil, and salt before serving.

Patsas

If you are looking to truly dive into Greek culture, you may want to try making Patsas. This soup often incorporates lamb head and feet to make the broth richer. Other ingredients include garlic, lemon juice, onions, vinegar. This dish is served with toasted bread and is perfect for a cold winter night.
