Your Guide to Traditional Greek Spirits

Greece is known for its breathtaking scenery, delicious cuisine, and rich history. But it is also famous for creating the best wine and spirits collections in the world. Explore a few of the most popular spirits from Greece that can be enjoyed on their own or in a cocktail!

Ouzo

Ouzo is one of the most popular liquors in all of Greece. This unique beverage was created in the 1800s and to this day can only be made in Greece and Cyprus. Ouzo is made with grape or grain and is distilled with anise, fennel, and other herbs. This black licorice-flavored drink is usually served alongside appetizers such as cheese, dips, or olives. The proper way to enjoy ouzo is chilled and diluted with water.

Tsipouro

Tsipouro has a close resemblance to ouzo but is far less popular outside of Greece. There are records of tsipouro production dating back to the 14th century. This liquor is crafted using the leftover grapes from winemaking, called pomace. This Greek drink is powerful in taste and holds around 40% alcohol. Like ouzo, tsipouro is served cold, diluted with water, and typically enjoyed during a meal’s appetizer portion.

Masthia

Masthia is a refreshing drink that the Greeks love to enjoy on a warm summer day. This drink is produced solely on the island of Chios from the raisin of mastic trees. This drink is unique to the country because its raisins are only grown on the island. Masthia is a sweet liquor with hints of pine, herbs, and citrus. It is traditionally served as an aperitif with meze or as a digestif.

Tentura

Tentura is a rich, dark liquor originating from Patras, Greece. It is a combination of brandy, rum, herbs, and spices. You can find hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and citrus flavors incorporated into the drink. Tentura can be mixed in a cocktail or enjoyed neat over ice. The Greeks typically serve tentura as an aperitif or as a digestif.
